"Cardinal Rules of Safety" Established

- submitted by Rich Warden, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer

For the last two months, a subcommittee of the Corporate Safety Committee, the Safety Department, and field operations employees have developed a list of rules which require the highest level of compliance within our company. These nine rules place the highest priority on people, and support our goal of zero injuries. There are certainly other rules that must be followed but violation of these require immediate disciplinary action for the first offense.

Most are self explanatory but to avoid misinterpretation I will explain some:

Horseplay: This does not mean innocent kidding, or joking with coworkers. If someone states that they do not want to participate in the joking then that should be sufficient to prohibit others from continuing.

Possession of Firearms: Many employees enjoy hunting and may wish to travel to a hunting site directly from work. This is acceptable but we must emphasize that the hunting weapons must be properly stored and never brought directly into the workplace. Any other dangerous weapon would fall under this requirement (large knife, cross bow, etc.).

Seat Belts: Seat belts are a proven method to reduce injuries in accidents involving moving equipment. In most states it is also a law. RGI policy requires use of seat belts as do government regulations. We want to emphasize our support of this proven life saver. If someone is in a vehicle or equipment that is not being operated they do not have to have the seat belt on until it is being operated.

Everyone is required to be educated on these rules and they should be posted on the safety bulletin boards and distributed to employees for reference. This list is subject to changes as we see the need.
