Safety Bulletin: Heat Stress - Overcome by Heat

Earlier this week we had our second heat related work injury. Both are lost time, but both employees have returned to work. You should have received in the last few days a bulletin on Heat Stress. I don't have to emphasize how hot the work you do can be, but what we must emphasize is the need to consider the effects of this heat on fellow employees.

The bulletin that is attached gives guidelines on how heat related illnesses should be handled. It should be distributed and covered in a safety meeting with all employees. Each of us must be responsible for our part in preventing heat related illness. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids prior to going to work and continue drinking fluids (water is the best) throughout the day. Avoid eating a large lunch and then working in hot conditions. This can aggravate the effect of the heat. Supervisors must recognize when conditions are right for this risk - high temperature with high humidity is the worst - , and take precautions.

Each construction crew and fixed location should have someone trained in first aid who would help in these situations. Thanks, Ed
