Homemade Toothpaste

You will need:

Calcium carbonate (ground up antacids such as TUMS is an easy source)

Baking soda

A small plastic cup

Plastic spoon

Water

Please have an adult's supervision for this activity.

Toothpaste comes from stone, rock, minerals

If you brushed your teeth today . . .
then you used these rocks and minerals --

Calcium carbonate ( a type of limestone rock), zeolites, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with clay. If you used a fluoride gel, then you used sand and feldspar.

The calcium carbonate and sand act as an abrasive. The sodium bicarbonate acts as a cleansing agent.

Grind up some antacids like TUMS into a powder. Place 1/2 teaspoon of the calcium carbonate into the plastic cup. Add 1/4 teaspoon baking soda to the cup. Add a drop or two of water to make a paste. Stir.

Now, go brush your teeth!
