Corporate Group Takes Easter
Goodies to Knowles Center
|
A group of corporate employees dashed
though the rain on Wednesday in an effort to reach the van before their boxes of Easter
candy were damaged. We were on our way to the Joseph B. Knowles Senior Citizens Center. Our first visit was during the Christmas season last year. Everyone who went was so touched that each had a story about an experience. Betty Shoemaker, Arndra Smith, Jennifer Wade, Donna Carini, Suzy Wilson and Pat Goostree talked about an especially interesting lady who was at one time a radio talk show hostess from Chicago. Barbara Roberts, the Activities Director of the home, greeted us with her personable enthusiasm as she ushered us to a sitting area filling with residents who were coming to hear a book reading by a group of local high school students. Many recognized our group and began asking about our families. They all had family stories of their own to tell. The gracious Southern charm of these people seemed reminiscent of a lost era. They accepted the gifts of Easter candy, made up of old fashioned pink marshmallow bunnies and other goodies, with deep appreciation. Many were anxious to have their pictures taken and to see the printed photos. The Joseph B. Knowles Home for the Aged is a residential and medical care facility for low income and destitute people who are at least 55 years old and unable to care for themselves without assistance. Neither their circumstances nor the rain could dampen their attitudes. Their wealth is in their character, and their charm will surely draw us back again for another visit soon. |
