Friday, September 26, was "Reading To Succeed Day” in select Tennessee schools, and Rutherford County Quarry Quality Control Tech Darrell Land was among the community volunteers reading to classes in schools in Rutherford County. Throughout the day, Darrell read to 60 students in four different second-grade classes at Hobgood Elementary School in Murfreesboro.
Appropriately enough, the book Darrell read to the little ones was entitled Road Builders and discussed the basic steps in building a road. Darrell also brought samples of different-sized rocks and an asphalt core to show the children. As a special treat, RGI donated small pouches with pencils, rulers and erasers to give to each child. Also, Darrell gave the children small "stress rocks” with the RGI logo. They were a big hit with the kids.
Accompanying Darrell for the day was his neighbor, State Representative John Hood, who was impressed with Rogers Group’s participation.
By reading to the classes, Darrell logged 8.5 hours toward SETN’s goal of 100 hours of community service to commemorate 100 years of Rogers Group.
