Referred to by Hendersonville Mayor Jim Fuqua as the new "Gateway to the City", the $5.1 million extension of Indian Lake Boulevard to Vietnam Veterans Boulevard officially opened on September 14, 2004.
"The road was built primarily to give the citizens of Hendersonville and all Sumner County residents traffic relief, improved safety, and to encourage economic development for the community," said Sumner County Executive Hank Thompson.
Rick Turner, RGI Mid Central Division VP stated, "I'm proud of the end product produced by the team of Project Manager Todd Nash, Concrete Foreman Stan Maynard, Bridge Superintendent Connie Billings, Grading Superintendent Bill Dixon, Grading Foremen Randy West, John Goff and Ronnie Box and their crews for their excellent work. Additional work was performed by the NMTN base and paving crews under the supervision of Jim Richardson. The road is not only a beautiful addition to the City of Hendersonville, it provides a much safer entry to the city for the traveling public."
The extension of the existing Indian Lake Blvd. To State Route 386 (Vietnam Veteran's Blvd.) allowed for the closure of Callender Lane - a narrow, winding road intersected by a CSX RR grade crossing that had been the scene of several fatalities in the past.
