Ingersoll-Rand

IR Equipment

Ingersoll-Rand Company is a major industrial equipment and components manufacturer with a roster of global brands serving a wide range of industrial and commercial markets. Based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, Ingersoll-Rand operates approximately 100 manufacturing facilities and employs some 47,000 people in more than 40 countries. In 1998, the company recorded sales of $8.3 billion and ranks among the Fortune 250.

Tracing its history to 1871, Ingersoll-Rand has been a member of the New York Stock Exchange since October 1906 -- longer than all but seven other firms. The company was founded by Simon Ingersoll, the inventor of the first air-operated pneumatic rock drill. Until that time, drilling had been done with one person holding a drill ("jack") and another person hitting it with a hammer - the origin of the term "jackhamer" and a company trademark.

Ingersoll-Rand businesses are organized in four reporting segments:
  • Specialty Vehicles, including Bobcat® skid-steer loaders and compact hydraulic excavators; Blaw-Knox® pavers; and IngersollRand® compactors, drilling equipment and rough-terrain material handlers.
  • Air & Temperature Control, including Thermo King® transport temperature control equipment, and Ingersoll-Rand air compressors.
  • Engineered Products, including Torrington® and Fafnir® bearings and components, and pumps used in industrial, commercial and municipal applications.
  • Hardware & Tools, including architectural hardware products, doors, columns, and tools and related industrial-production equipment.

IR Equipment"Most of the Ingersoll-Rand equipment that we use within Rogers Group are pavers and rollers, although we do have some of their drills," said John Sweeney, Jr, Vice President Western Kentucky and Central Production Services. "Ingersoll-Rand makes the best rollers on the market today, and the Blaw-Knox paver is one of the best available."

The company's Construction and Mining Group manufactures vibratory soil and asphalt compactors, straight-mast and rough-terrain forklifts (Road Machinery); portable air compressors, generators, light towers (Portable Compressor); self-propelled, water well and blasthole drills (Rotary Drill); and crawler drills, air and hydraulically powered rock drills and drilling accessories (Rock Drill). These products are used around the world in general construction, road construction and rehabilitation, soil stabilization and ground engineering, water wells, quarrying and mining.

"We've had tremendous success with their equipment," noted Sweeney. "Last year in Western Kentucky we laid over 500,000 tons of asphalt -- all with Ingersoll-Rand pavers and rollers -- and we had no problems whatsoever."

The relationship between RGI and Ingersoll-Rand goes back many years. In the last five years Rogers has purchased most of its compaction and paving equipment from them. Some locations acquired by RGI also used Ingersoll-Rand equipment, including rock drills, compactors, Blaw-Knox pavers and portable compressors.

"By reputation and from my dealings with RGI, I would say that Rogers is one of the most professional organizations I've ever worked with," said John Baxter, Manager, Major Accounts at Ingersoll-Rand. "RGI is demanding of a supplier, but very fair at the same time - and that's the way it should be."

Ingersoll-Rand equipment is sold through distributors, although the company has approximately 15 direct sale locations. Additional information about Ingersoll-Rand can be found on their website: www.ingersoll-rand.com.
