Nashville Volunteer Readers Share Special Gifts

Now in their second month of volunteering, Nashville office staffers are finding they get back more than they give by reading to the children of Park Avenue Elementary as part of the PENCIL Reading Achievement Program.

"It is surprisingly easy," says Tricia Hicks, Tax Department, who reads to Mrs. Michael's class of fifteen kindergartners. "The kids were so excited about hearing a story I forgot my initial anxiety. They gather around me on the floor while I read; their rapt attention to the story is always endearing, and each child gives me a special hug before I leave. I went to give something to these kids; I left with so much more."

During one of President & CEO Don Williamson's visits to Park Avenue he learned that teachers often have to reach into their own pockets for basic school supplies like construction paper, glue, crayons, etc. He then authorized a monetary contribution to each participating teacher, which were presented by volunteer readers.

Credit Manager Janice Graff, our "Fish Lady", brought one of her special tropical fish/plant vases in for her special needs class then sat with the children to talk about it's care before reading her story. The kids showered her with affection before she left.

Susan Crutchfield brought her class a dragon adventure story, which coincided with the teacher's lessons for the week to the delight of all. Big eyes and ears observed every expression in her voice and face as she told the tale. All sought an opportunity to hug her as she left.

Park Avenue teachers create a comfortable, safe, fun learning environment, and from the looks on the children's faces, love is in plentiful supply here too. Rogers volunteer readers are happy to share in and contribute to this positive environment.
