Geologists from all over the world come to the Newton County Stone quarry to find answers to this phenomenon.
The Meteorite Theory
Millions of years ago, a meteorite of at least 1/2 mile in diameter, and probably closer to one mile, struck the earth at Newton County Stone. The impact was so violent, it stood the rock on end. The rock at the quarry should be 2,000 feet beneath the ground.
The presence of rock displaying shatter cones, which are coned shaped flaws formed by violent shock waves, and the discovery of the metal coesite (a dense variety of silica produced under very great pressure and found in the sandstone of large meteor craters) makes this history more valid than the volcano theory.
Shatter cone from Newton County Stone is on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. A large piece is on display at Newton County Stone as well.
