Only a short bus ride away from most local classrooms, Newton County Stone is a favorite field trip destination for area teachers. The quarry provides students increased awareness about how stone products are used and an opportunity to explore geological history. Newton County Stone is not only a commercial mining business but also, home to a meteorite impact site. The quarry gives many school tours.
During the month of October, over 150 students from South Newton, Tri-County, Culver, and St. Joseph schools came to visit and enjoyed a tour led by Susan Ward, Field Office Clerk. DePauw University students and a retired, geology hobbyist also joined us for a brief visit led by Tom Goyette, Superintendent.
"The tour gives students an opportunity to go out and experience some real science and not something just taught under a controlled environment in the classroom," said Ward. "The kids really jumped in there and participated - studying rocks. Many of the students thought the rocks they had gathered had the shape of the state of Indiana, Tennessee, some were just pretty, and some contained interesting fragments of shattercone. We provide an educational and fun-filled day. There is no better way to educate than to provide a first-hand experience."
