Area Schools Tour Newton County Stone

Recently, two schools toured Newton County Stone (NIN). The first group was comprised of homeschool students between the ages of 5 and 16 years from the Kentland (IN) area and into Illinois. The students learned about mining by digging through birdseed to find particular seeds. Parents acted as MSHA officials giving out fines for seeds spilled on the table and excessive noise. Through this activity and by watching videos, children learned what it takes to mine for a specific rock. The next group that visited was 36 third graders from South Newton Elementary. After looking at the mine from the top, the students sorted through a pile of rock and picked out certain kinds of rock.

Homeschool students pause their tour to pose for a picture.
