Daylay Egg Farm, Inc. was formed in 1977. Rogers Group, Inc. Specialty Products has been supplying them with high calcium limestone since the middle 1980's.
Daylay is located northwest of Columbus, in Raymond and West Mansfield, Ohio. It consists of three egg production facilities and two pullet facilities. The three layer farms currently house two million layers while the pullet farms house over one million birds.
Daylay purchases chicks at one day of age and raises them until they are pullets. At approximately eighteen weeks of age, pullets are moved from the pullet facilities to the laying houses. They produce eggs from the ages of 20 weeks to 106 weeks. The Logan County pullet facility's design incorporates a central composting room for composting all the manure. They are currently marketing their compost as an Organic Fertilizer called Nature Pure. A recent expansion added an additional one million laying hens and two state-of-the-art composting facilities.
| Each egg production facility is automated to make sure Daylay eggs are packed within a "day of lay." | Daylay Egg Farm is one of the largest, high quality egg producers in the country. Each egg production facility is automated to make sure Daylay eggs are packed within a "day of lay", hence the name "Daylay". Daylay Egg Farm markets their eggs primarily in the eastern part of the United State to wholesalers. |
Daylay also operates a feedmill where feed for chickens is mixed. Tim Sherwood, the mill manger, is responsible for the 300 tons of feed produced daily. Daylay buys three million bushels of corn from farms in Central Ohio.
The composting facilities were recently installed to take the raw manure and change it into a safe, low odor fertilizer called Nature Pure. Three compost turners are used to turn six lanes of compost per day, which facilitates the plugflow windrow system and allows for the manure to be well mixed and aerated to enhance the composting process. Additional aeration is provided by an in-floor pressured air system, which supplies the windrows.
Nature Pure is a dry, granular compost product, which is sold near current fertilizer values.
Daylay also offers custom application service. They also offer farmers the opportunity to rent a fertilizer spreader to spread fertilizer for themselves. The compost is more environmentally friendly, application rates are better controlled, and nutrient leaching is significantly decreased.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency stringently guides land application programs from raw manure. For raw manure application the manure must be incorporated into the soil within 24 hours after application.
