Rogers Group is growing, in part due to important customers like Nabholz Construction Corporation.
Nabholz was founded in Conway in 1949 by R.D. Nabholz, and has grown into a regional general contractor and construction management organization with locations in Conway, Rogers, and Little Rock, Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Springfield, Missouri. Nabholz is privately owned and currently the 143rd largest general contractor in the United States.
"Our services include commercial, industrial, and institutional building projects, equipment maintenance and setting, pre-engineered steel building applications, custom millwork and finish carpentry, and site preparation and underground utilities contracting,"explains April Weeks, Nabholz’ Public Relations spokesperson.
Rogers Group and Nabholz Construction have much in common. In addition to longevity and growth, Nabholz demonstrates a strong commitment to safety and quality. Their safety program has earned two national awards from the US Department of Labor, and like RGI, is a role model in their industry in promoting safety. Their Total Quality Management program started 10+ years ago, and their achievements have earned the National Quality Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors and the Arkansas Quality Achievement Award, whose selection criteria is based on the Malcolm Baldrige Award.
Nabholz had been a customer of McConnell Materials for some time when Rogers acquired McConnell last year. They purchase some of everything Rogers’ Central Arkansas SBU has to offer: crushed stone, asphalt, and precast concrete products.
Nabholz is currently general contractor on a major new prison facility in Newport, Arkansas, and the $2 million in structural precast concrete products and services are coming from Rogers.
The total project is expected to cost between $37 and $40 million and is scheduled for completion the end of this year.
This will be Arkansas’s first privately owned and managed prison. Prison overcrowding is a serious national issue, and privatization provides cost savings, quick delivery of new facilities, quality service and budget certainty. Nabholz is employing a unique system to help keep the project on budget and on time.
An on-site weather tracking radar system has been provided by the Farm Bureau to get specific and current weather information. The system is used by farmers to know when to spray pesticides or do other weather-related work, and seems to make sense for contractors faced with similar decisions. With forecasting help and good coordination, the Newport job is about 30% complete and on schedule.

"The quality of materials and work is as good or better than any in the business, and it’s good doing business with a company located in the same town (Conway)."

Howell also credits Nabholz Project Superintendents Robert Rappold and Carter Rickman, and senior managers Earl Ballentine and Mike Moix for making the relationship between the two companies positive and productive.
RGI’s crushing and construction teams lead by Jay McConnell and Doug McConnell work with Nabholz as well: one example is stone and paving provided for two expansions Nabholz built for Acxiom, a local information processing company.
