Getting a Look at the "Constructed" World

Build - Up
How will we create the excitement and enthusiasm needed to attract eager and motivated individuals to build the buildings, roads and bridges of tomorrow?

Rogers Group is delighted to join Associated General Contractors in supporting a new program and to play an active role in our local community. The AGC and Scholastic developed Build Up! designed to enhance the image of the construction industry and to inform and educate children, their parents and teachers about the many career opportunities the construction industry has to offer.

In Alabama, Rogers Group is using the Build Up! program at the Waterloo and Central elementary schools.

Developed for use with fifth graders, the program uses math and science to show students the practical application of what they are studying. Other hands-on activities focus on basic principles of construction. Students will build structures in class with different construction materials and study the infrastructure they encounter in their daily lives.

At Waterloo and Central, each student team will design and build a bridge. They will measure the bridges ability to hold dead weight.

"Not everyone who is introduced to the program will be going into construction, but these fifth graders will be the people who sit on city and county planning commissions. These students are the future voters, mayors and community leaders and, from this program, they will have a better appreciation for the importance of construction in their lives," said Jerald Smith, NAL sales representative.

The cost to sponsor one tool kit is $185 through AGC, and is provided free of charge to teachers throughout the country. Sponsors are also asked to volunteer in the classrooms to increase personal interaction with the students.

Rogers' investment in Build-Up with our Alabama area students is mutually beneficial; we have direct input into young lives who can develop the skills employers want; and students gain better understanding about jobs in our industry. It is a good way to attract the best young talent for the future.

We are committing ourselves to an exciting and long-range plan to educate children and support the construction industry.
